Erpe

The Erpe is a 32-kilometre right tributary of the Spree, rising north of Werneuchen and flowing into the Spree in Berlin-Friedrichshagen. Along its course it changes name several times - Stienitzfliess, Langes Elsenfliess, Neuenhagener Muehlenfliess - and traces a typical glacial channel through the Barnim plateau. For centuries it powered watermills, several of which survive as houses or restaurants. The Erpe trail today runs from Werneuchen via Hoppegarten down to the Spree and is popular with Berlin cyclists looking for a quiet weekend route just outside the city.
