Fetihkapı

Fetihkapı — Turkish for "Gate of Conquest" — is a historic gateway set within Istanbul's Theodosian land walls, the formidable fortifications built in the 5th century under Emperor Theodosius II. The name is a direct reference to May 29, 1453, when Ottoman forces under Sultan Mehmed II breached these very walls and ended more than a millennium of Byzantine rule in Constantinople. The surviving gate structures and wall sections here represent some of the best-preserved late-antique urban fortifications anywhere in Europe. A nearby Metro İstanbul station shares the name, making the site straightforward to reach by public transit.
