Sarayburnu Hilll

Sarayburnu Hill occupies the ancient cape where the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn, and the Sea of Marmara converge — a point the Greeks called Bosporios Akra, the promontory around which early Byzantion took shape. Before masonry came water: the hill's value was always about controlling sea lanes between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. Mehmed II later chose the slopes below for his Topkapı Palace complex, recognizing the same strategic logic. Today the well-maintained park is markedly calmer than neighboring Sultanahmet, with shaded benches, a constant sea breeze, and ferry horns drifting up from below. Street musicians and picnickers gather here especially toward evening, when the views over the surrounding straits are at their widest.
