Frans Hals Museum

The Frans Hals Museum is the municipal art museum of Haarlem, named after the portraitist Frans Hals (c. 1582-1666). It occupies the former Oudemannenhuis, an early seventeenth-century almshouse for elderly men built around a quiet courtyard. The collection holds the key works of the Haarlem school of the Dutch Golden Age, including Hals' life-size militia and regent portraits, famous for their loose brushwork and psychological precision. Visitors walk through rooms once inhabited by the almshouse residents and see, alongside Hals, paintings by Jan Steen, Jacob van Ruisdael and contemporary artists placed in dialogue with the old masters. The historic garden and small cafe make this a calm half-day trip away from Amsterdam's crowds.
