Franciscan Church

The Franciscan Church of St Jerome on Franziskanerplatz in central Vienna was built between 1603 and 1611 - a rare blend of southern Renaissance facade with Gothic-inflected interior reflecting the late humanist age of Austria. Behind the smooth columns and volutes lies a single-nave hall in which the Woeckherl Organ was installed in 1642: Vienna's oldest still-playable instrument and one of Central Europe's most important Renaissance organs, built by Viennese organ-maker Johann Wockherl. Its pipe voices remain almost entirely in original condition and are presented in regular chamber concerts. The high altar with its trompe-l'oeil painting by Tyrolean master Andrea Pozzo and the high-baroque fittings rank among the city centre's most striking detail ensembles. The church is listed and open daily.
