III. Städtischer Friedhof Stubenrauchstraße

Schoeneberg III Cemetery on Stubenrauchstrasse in Berlin's Friedenau district was laid out in 1881 as the burial ground of the then-independent municipality of Friedenau. It is state-owned and listed. It would be a pleasant bourgeois Gruenderzeit cemetery among many – were it not for two famous Berliners who had left their hometown but returned at the end: Marlene Dietrich, who died in Paris in 1992 and asked to be buried near her mother and sister – her grave in Field H is a place of pilgrimage, often laid with red roses. And Helmut Newton, who died in 2004 and rests nearby under a plain dark stone. Other Friedenau notables also lie here. Walk through the gate on Stubenrauchstrasse and within twenty minutes you can pay your respects to two German icons who shaped the 20th century in their own ways.
