Neue Nationalgalerie

The Neue Nationalgalerie at Berlin's Kulturforum is the Berlin State Museums' home for twentieth-century art. It is Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's only completed German building after 1945 and counts as an icon of Classical Modernism. The black steel-and-glass pavilion on a granite terrace opened in 1968 and spans a column-free skylit hall under a 1,290-square-metre steel roof. The collection covers Edvard Munch, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Max Beckmann alongside Pop Art by Andy Warhol. Between 2015 and 2021 David Chipperfield carried out a restrained restoration, and since reopening the building has staged major temporary shows, most recently a Gerhard Richter retrospective.
