The Gallipoli Mosque in Sydney's Auburn district is one of Australia's most significant Islamic places of worship. Its name commemorates the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey, site of a defining World War I battle — a tribute from the Turkish-Australian community. The first mosque on this site opened in 1979; after 13 years of construction the current magnificent building was officially inaugurated on 28 November 1999. With its minarets and Ottoman-inspired dome, the mosque is a striking landmark in Auburn. It serves as a hub of Muslim community life in New South Wales and welcomes visitors of all faiths.
