Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial

The Hohenschoenhausen Memorial occupies the central Stasi remand prison where the East German secret police interrogated political prisoners until 1989. The complex was a blank spot on official Berlin maps, the surrounding restricted zone simply not acknowledged. Prisoners arrived in windowless vans driven on circuitous routes so they would not know their location. The submarine cellar cells from the Soviet phase of 1945 to 1951 survive, as do the later interrogation wings with rubber-padded and water cells. Today former inmates lead the tours, describing sleep deprivation, isolation and the systematic Zersetzung psychological dismantling from personal memory. These survivor-led walks make Hohenschoenhausen one of the most direct encounters with dictatorship anywhere in Germany. Visitors leave understanding how the SED state controlled its citizens without visible walls.
