Haas House

The Haas-Haus is a postmodern building on Stock-im-Eisen-Platz in the heart of Vienna's first district, designed by Hans Hollein and built between 1985 and 1990. Its placement directly opposite the Stephansdom triggered one of Vienna's biggest architectural debates of the late twentieth century: Hollein chose a polished glass and marble facade that mirrors the cathedral rather than retreats from it. The building is now regarded as a defining work of Austrian postmodernism and was placed under heritage protection in 2014. Inside it houses a shopping arcade, the DO and CO Hotel and the rooftop restaurant Do and Co, which offers one of the best close-up views of the Stephansdom and its patterned tile roof.
