Maria am Gestade
Vienna
Also known as: Minoritenkirche Maria Schnee, Friars Minor Conventual Church, Italian National Church of Mary of the Snows
The Minoritenkirche on Minoritenplatz in Vienna's First District is a Gothic hall church from the late 13th century. Founded in 1276 by the Franciscan Minor Friars, its distinctively truncated tower took its present silhouette during the Ottoman siege of 1683. Since 1786 it has been the home church of the city's Italian-speaking community. The interior is dominated by a vast mosaic copy of Leonardo's Last Supper, commissioned by Napoleon in Milan and brought to Vienna by detours after his fall. Since 2021 the Society of St Pius X has run the church, so the traditional Latin Mass is celebrated here regularly again. A quiet stop two minutes from the Hofburg.
