Hebbel Theater

The Hebbel-Theater at Stresemannstrasse 29 in Berlin-Kreuzberg was designed from 1907 to 1908 by Transylvanian theatre architect Oskar Kaufmann as his debut in Jugendstil and established his reputation as one of Europe's leading theatre builders. The corner building with around 800 seats fits seamlessly into the row of tenements but conceals inside a classic balcony auditorium with a vaulted foyer and intimate acoustics. Named after Friedrich Hebbel and opened with his Judith, it survived the war largely undamaged and in 1989 became the spearhead of Berlin's free scene under Nele Hertling. Since 2003 it has been part of Hebbel am Ufer (HAU) with two further stages and ranks as Germany's most important venue for experimental dance and performance theatre.
