Himmelskundliches Museum (Archenhold-Sternwarte)

The Archenhold-Sternwarte in Treptower Volkspark is Germany's oldest public observatory and home to the longest refracting telescope in the world — a 21-metre focal-length instrument built for Berlin's 1896 trade exhibition. Its founder Friedrich Simon Archenhold wanted to bring astronomy to ordinary Berliners, and the observatory's democratic spirit attracted Albert Einstein, who gave his very first public lecture on the theory of relativity here in 1915. The attached Himmelskundliches Museum displays historical instruments, comet specimens, and one of Berlin's most significant meteorite collections. Regular public evenings with guided telescope viewings let visitors observe the Moon, planets, and double stars through the historic refractor — a tangible connection to both deep space and the early history of modern physics.
