Huis van Hilde

Huis van Hilde in Castricum is the archaeological depot and museum of North Holland province, opened in 2015 in a plain new building right next to the train station. It is named after Hilde of Castricum, a woman who died in the 4th century, whose skeleton was found nearby and whose face was reconstructed digitally using forensic methods. The museum shows finds from the Stone Age to the Second World War, including wooden piles from pile dwellings and very well preserved medieval leather shoes. Especially appealing for families is the research workshop, where children can try archaeological methods themselves. The adjacent dune landscape and nearby beach make the visit an all-day trip.
