Italienische Kapelle Mariä Himmelfahrt

The Italian Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Roman Catholic chapel in Prague, built in the Mannerist style and listed as part of a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It was founded by Prague's historical Italian congregation — merchants and craftsmen who settled in Bohemia during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and brought with them the architectural tastes of Counter-Reformation Italy. Architecturally, the chapel's Mannerist proportions set it apart from the exuberant Baroque churches that dominate Prague's cityscape: its spatial geometry is more restrained, its ornamentation precise rather than theatrical. The chapel remains an active place of worship today, giving it an intimate devotional atmosphere that larger tourist-facing churches in the city rarely retain.
