Bohuslav Balbín

This memorial in Prague honors Bohuslav Balbín (1621–1688), a Jesuit scholar, historian, and polymath of the Baroque era. Balbín devoted his life to documenting Bohemian history and culture, producing the monumental 'Miscellanea historica regni Bohemiae', still referenced in Czech historiography today. His defense of the Czech language and identity against Habsburg centralization — articulated in 'Dissertatio apologetica pro lingua Slavonica', a text suppressed for decades by censors — marks him as an early precursor of Czech national consciousness. The memorial is a quiet site of historical remembrance that rewards visitors interested in Central European intellectual and religious history.
