Gothic imperial castle from 1348 near Prague – treasury of the Bohemian crown jewels and the most visited castle in the Czech Republic.

Karlštejn Castle is an imposing Gothic hilltop fortress located about 30 kilometres southwest of Prague in the Bohemian highlands. Emperor Charles IV had it built in 1348 to safely store the Imperial Regalia of the Holy Roman Empire and the Bohemian Crown Jewels. With around 147,000 visitors annually, it is among the most visited castles in the Czech Republic. Highlights include the richly decorated Chapel of the Holy Cross with medieval paintings and gemstone mosaics, as well as the massive keep.
