WilhelmineVictorian Era
Also known as: Komische Oper an der Weidendammer Brücke, Alte Komische Oper Berlin
The old Komische Oper was a privately run opera house at Friedrichstrasse 104 in Berlin-Mitte, just beside the Weidendammer Bridge. It should not be confused with today's Komische Oper on Behrenstrasse. The name referred to the Paris Opera-Comique and its genre, in which lighter material was performed with spoken dialogue. The house opened in Wilhelminian Berlin and was destroyed in the Second World War. Today only a plaque marks the site of this early attempt to establish popular operetta and French repertoire in the northern part of Mitte.
