Koningsplein

Koningsplein sits at the southern end of the Singel canal in Amsterdam-Centrum, created in 1593 when the Heiligewegspoort gate was demolished and the former city moat filled in. Its name refers to the 1815 enthronement of William I as King of the Netherlands. The square marks the eastern end of the famous floating flower market (Bloemenmarkt) that runs along the Singel toward Muntplein. Today Koningsplein is primarily a transit and shopping hub: trams cross it, the pedestrian streets Heiligeweg and Leidsestraat begin here, and the corner buildings house cafes and clothing stores. A lunchtime stop puts you between canal views and flower stalls.
