LVR-RömerMuseum

The LVR-RömerMuseum anchors the Archäologischer Park Xanten (APX), Germany's largest open-air archaeological museum, built directly on the grounds of the Roman colonial city Colonia Ulpia Traiana, which at its peak housed around 10,000 inhabitants. The museum building sits above the excavated foundations of an ancient harbour temple and displays thousands of original artefacts — ceramics, tools, weapons and everyday objects from the 1st to 4th centuries AD. A highlight is the reconstructed Roman bathhouse, estimated to have served up to 1,000 guests simultaneously, which visitors can walk through today. Living-history groups regularly reenact Roman crafts, battle tactics and cooking throughout the park, and a working torsion catapult is fired on select occasions. The site is fully wheelchair-accessible, has an on-site playground, and is easily large enough to fill an entire day.
