Matsumoto City Museum of Art

Opened in 2002 in central Matsumoto, this municipal art museum focuses on artists with strong ties to the city and its surrounding Nagano prefecture. Its most celebrated connection is Yayoi Kusama, who was born in Matsumoto — her signature polka-dot sculptures greet visitors outside the entrance, and a dedicated gallery holds rotating works from her vast output. The permanent collection also includes calligraphic works by Shinzan Kamijo and paintings by Tamiji Kitagawa. Compact across two floors, the museum has a well-stocked shop carrying Kusama-edition prints and merchandise, and sits within easy walking distance of Matsumoto Castle.
