Yohashira Shrine

Yohashira Shrine is a Shinto place of worship in the center of Matsumoto, founded in 1879 during the Meiji era when Japan was actively restructuring its religious institutions. The shrine is dedicated to four deities, including protective gods of labor and prosperity, and functions as the city's principal urban shrine. Characteristic torii gates frame the approach to the main hall, which follows classical Shinto architectural conventions. Throughout the year, seasonal matsuri festivals draw local residents for prayer and celebration, and visitors traditionally purchase omamori protective charms. The shrine sits close to Matsumoto Castle, making it a natural stop on any walk through the historic city center.
