Matsumoto Station is the main transit hub of Matsumoto city in Nagano Prefecture, set amid the Japanese Alps. Opened in 1902 during the Meiji era, it is today jointly operated by JR East and regional carrier Alpico Kōtsū. For most visitors the station serves as a practical gateway to Matsumoto Castle and the surrounding mountain region rather than a destination in its own right.
