Micropia

Micropia is the world's first museum dedicated solely to microorganisms. It opened on 30 September 2014 as a department of the Artis zoo in Amsterdam, next to the main entrance on Plantage Kerklaan. The exhibition makes bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists visible through high-power microscopes, live cameras and interactive stations. Highlights include a body scanner that visualises your personal microbe flora on screens, and a working microbe lab where scientists can be watched through glass. Micropia took twelve years to develop with university partners and has won multiple design awards. It works as a standalone highlight beside the zoo and offers a startling shift in perspective, especially for families with children eight and up.
