Imperial Furniture Collection

The Imperial Furniture Collection in Vienna's seventh district grew out of the Court Furniture Depot founded in 1747 by Maria Theresa - a vast warehouse for the mobile furnishings of the Habsburg residences. When the emperor moved between the Hofburg and Schoenbrunn, beds, wardrobes and chairs travelled with him, and the depot managed the inventory. Today the museum displays thousands of pieces, from Emperor Franz Joseph's spittoon and Charles VI's travel throne to Empress Sisi's private footstool. A separate wing documents Viennese Modernism with originals by Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner, Josef Hoffmann and Michael Thonet. Visitors walk through chronologically arranged halls from Baroque through Biedermeier to Jugendstil, and learn that the famous 1955 Sissi film trilogy drew its props from here - Romy Schneider's on-screen chair often stands beside the original poster.
