Statue of Helmuth von Moltke the Elder

The Moltke Memorial at the Grosser Stern in Berlin's Tiergarten honours Helmuth von Moltke the Elder, the Prussian chief of staff who planned the wars of 1864, 1866 and 1870-71 against Denmark, Austria and France and so paved the way for German unification. Joseph Uphues created the bronze in 1904 in Neo-Baroque style; it shows Moltke in gala uniform holding field glasses, with allegories of Victory and History at the base. The monument originally stood at Koenigsplatz in front of the Reichstag, alongside the Bismarck and Roon statues. In 1938 Albert Speer moved it to its present site west of the Victory Column as part of his Germania axis plans. Visitors reach it easily on foot from the Siegessaeule and see it as part of an ensemble of Wilhelmine military memorials around the Grosser Stern.
