Museum Van Loon

Museum Van Loon is a fully intact Amsterdam canal palace at Keizersgracht 672. Built in 1672 to a design by Adriaan Dortsman, the house was bought in 1884 by the patrician Van Loon family, whose ancestor Willem van Loon co-founded the Dutch East India Company in 1602. The house has been open to the public since 1973, while the family long kept the basement as a residence. Inside, stuccoed ceilings, gilt-leather wall coverings, original family portraits, and a complete 18th-century dining room line up in sequence. A narrow Baroque garden behind leads to a classicist coach house with stables. This Rijksmonument shows the daily life of Amsterdam's elite during the Golden Age with rare clarity.
