National Centre of Scientific Research "DEMOKRITOS"

Also known as: Demokritos, National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos" (NCSR), NCSR

Athens

NCSR Demokritos is Greece's largest research centre, founded in 1959 on the northern edge of Athens and named after the ancient atomist philosopher Democritus. Its core was originally a small research reactor that produced neutrons for materials science and medical isotopes until decommissioning in 2014. Today eight institutes operate side by side, covering informatics, physics, chemistry, life sciences and radiology, with an AI lab that has earned a strong European reputation. Public access is limited to occasional open days and school programs, plus guided visits to the on-site Demokritos Museum tracing the early Greek atomic age.
