Neue Welt

Also known as: Filmtheater im Wintergarten

Neue Welt at the foot of the Rollberg in Neukoelln is a former beer palace whose outdoor grounds have hosted beer gardens since 1867. In the 19th century the entire Hasenheide was lined with excursion taverns where Berlin workers and families gathered on Sundays; Neue Welt was among the largest, seating thousands. Marlene Dietrich and other stars later performed here, and in the 1920s the hall became a dance palace and variety theatre. Today the listed building hosts concerts, parties and trade fairs. The acoustics of the great hall and the worn patina of the wooden floors still recall its former heyday, while the surrounding Hasenheide remains a green lung of Neukoelln.
