Övelgönne

Övelgönne is a narrow shoreside path along Hamburg's Elbe bank, lined with 19th-century pilots' and captains' cottages that are among the oldest continuously inhabited buildings on the river. River pilots who guided incoming ships into the port lived here to be within immediate reach of arriving vessels — a function that shaped the entire character of the settlement. The Museumshafen Övelgönne, moored directly on the waterfront, preserves a collection of historic steamers and tugboats open for guided tours. The sandy Elbe beach below is one of the few spots in Hamburg where you can sit at the water's edge and watch container ships pass at close range, with low tide exposing a surprisingly wide strip of sand.
