Peripatos (Akropolis)

The Peripatos is an ancient walking path running around the base of the Acropolis rock in Athens. It leads from the modern main entrance northeast along the slope to the Odeon of Pericles, and in antiquity marked the boundary between the sacred precincts on the hill and the city below. Pausanias, writing in the 2nd century AD, described the shrines along this path, including caves dedicated to Pan, Apollo and Aphrodite. Today the Peripatos is part of the unified archaeological promenade linking Athens' principal ancient sites. Walkers pass the Theater of Dionysus and the Asklepieion while looking up at the Acropolis foundations from below.
