Iron-Gate Square

Plac Za Zelazna Brama, Square behind the Iron Gate, lies in the northwestern part of central Warsaw and takes its name from a vanished gate of the Saxon Garden. A predecessor was laid out here in the 17th century in the gardens of the Lubomirski family, whose Baroque palace, moved several times, now stands at the western edge of the square. After the Second World War the district was almost completely rebuilt in the 1960s and 1970s with long prefabricated apartment slabs, today forming one of Poland's largest continuous modernist housing complexes. Between the blocks stands the 19th-century Mirowska market hall. A contradictory piece of Warsaw where Baroque and socialist planning meet.
