Praterstern

Praterstern is a large roundabout in Vienna's 2nd district Leopoldstadt where seven streets meet in a star pattern - hence the name. In the centre stands the Tegetthoff Monument completed in 1886, a 35-metre column for Austrian Vice-Admiral Wilhelm von Tegetthoff, who defeated the Italian fleet at the Battle of Lissa in 1866. On the north side sits Vienna Praterstern station, an important S-Bahn and intercity hub. Immediately to the east the Wurstelprater begins with the famous Wiener Riesenrad - so the square is the gateway to the amusement park. The square has a rough reputation but has seen more visitors since renovation in the 2010s. Best to continue straight on to the Ferris wheel or the Praterallee.
