Treptower Park

Treptower Park stretches along the Spree in Berlin's Treptow-Köpenick district, combining expansive green space with one of the largest Soviet war memorials outside Russia. Inaugurated in 1949, the memorial was built by Soviet troops in record time and contains the graves of approximately 7,000 Red Army soldiers who died in the final Battle of Berlin in 1945. At its center stands a 12-meter bronze figure of a Soviet soldier cradling a child and crushing a swastika underfoot — a monumental piece of socialist realist sculpture designed by Yevgeny Vuchetich. The surrounding park remains heavily used by locals for jogging and riverside walks, while the memorial continues to serve as a site of formal commemoration, school visits, and quiet personal reflection.
