Düsseldorf and its surrounding region offer a varied cultural scene. The Schifffahrtsmuseum traces the history of Rhine navigation, while the Löbbecke Museum und Aquazoo connects natural history with science. Industrial heritage comes to life at Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord and the Gasometer Oberhausen. Theatre-goers can choose between the Aalto-Theater, the Apollo-Theater and the Capitol Theater. The Museum zur Vorgeschichte des Films documents early visual media, and sites such as Burg Blankenstein, the Alter Kupferdreher Bahnhof and the Bismarckturm Viersen round out a diverse cultural landscape across the area.

The Altes Theater on Marktplatz was a playhouse in the heart of Düsseldorf's old town, operating from 1747 until the early 1870s. It occupied the former foundry of Baroque sculptor Gabriel Grupello, where the famous Jan Wellem equestrian statue had been cast — a legacy still reflected in its alternative name, the "Grupellotheater." The building was abandoned after a new city theatre opened on today's Heinrich-Heine-Allee in 1875, and the original structure no longer survives.

The old synagogue of Neuss stood on Promenadenstraße, opposite the current Sparkasse bank. Built in 1867, it was the religious center of Neuss's Jewish community during the Gründerzeit and Imperial German periods. During the pogrom of November 9–10, 1938, the synagogue, like thousands of others across Germany, was destroyed by the National Socialists. Today a memorial stone at its former location commemorates what was once a thriving Jewish community in the city. The site stands as a reminder, amid the everyday activity of a modern shopping street, of the destruction of an entire community — part of the deliberate integration of memorial culture into Germany's public spaces.
