In Kecel, a small town on the Hungarian Great Plain, a complete Soviet 9K72 Elbrus missile complex is preserved as an open-air exhibit. The R-17 rocket — widely known in the West by its NATO designation Scud-B — first flew in 1959 and became the most widely deployed short-range ballistic missile of the Cold War; Hungary operated the system as a Warsaw Pact member through the 1990s. The display includes the iconic MAZ-543 transporter-erector-launcher, which raises the missile to its firing angle, shown here at full scale. It offers a rare, close-up encounter with hardware that shaped the nuclear standoff of the Cold War era.
