Florence
The Aare is Switzerland's longest river contained entirely within its borders, stretching 288 kilometres from its Alpine source to its confluence with the Rhine. Despite being technically a tributary, it carries more water than the Moselle and Main rivers combined, making it hydrologically exceptional in Central Europe. Along its course the river has given rise to a distinctive Swiss bathing culture: the practice of drifting downstream with the current — known as Aareschwimmen — has become a summer ritual especially around Bern. Riverside paths and cycling routes trace much of its length, while stronger sections attract kayakers and paddlers throughout the warmer months.
