Asopos

The Asopos is a 57-kilometre river in central Greece, rising on the Lefktra plateau north of Mount Kithairon and emptying into the southern Gulf of Euboea near Chalkoutsi. It flows through the Boeotian municipalities of Thiva and Tanagra before crossing briefly into West Attica. In Greek mythology, the river shares its name with the river god Asopos — son of Okeanos and father of nymphs including Aigina and Thebe, who gave their names to major ancient cities. Today the river corridor is primarily of interest to walkers and cyclists; parts of its lower course have faced water quality concerns due to past industrial discharge.
