Abaton

Abaton is one of Hamburg's most respected arthouse cinemas, located in the Eimsbüttel district close to the university. Since the 1970s it has shown independent films, international auteur cinema, documentaries, and short film programs far removed from mainstream multiplex fare. Its proximity to the university has long defined its audience — Abaton is considered a gathering point for Hamburg's cinephile community. The cinema runs several intimate screens, late-night screenings are a fixture of its schedule, and a small bar attached to the lobby extends the experience beyond the films themselves.
