Castle of Montemor-o-Velho

The Castle of Montemor-o-Velho sits on a wooded hill above the Mondego river plain, roughly 30 kilometres west of Coimbra. Founded in 1088, the fortress was developed during the Reconquista as a key defensive stronghold against Moorish counterattacks, and its substantial curtain walls and watchtowers survive largely intact — a relatively rare degree of preservation for a Portuguese medieval castle of this age. Listed as a national cultural monument, it offers a tangible encounter with Iberian medieval military architecture. From the battlements, visitors look out over the patchwork of rice fields and river meanders of the Mondego valley, a panorama that rewards the short climb to the hilltop.
