Abbot Tower

The Abtturm (Abbot's Tower) is the surviving defensive tower of the former Premonstratensian monastery of Churwalden in the canton of Graubünden, founded around 1101 and dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The Premonstratensians — a canons regular order established in 12th-century France — operated the monastery until its dissolution in the late medieval period, after which the tower remained the sole standing structure. Classified as Swiss cultural heritage of national importance (Class A), it ranks among the most protected historic monuments in Switzerland. Standing at the northern edge of Churwalden village, the compact Romanesque tower is a rare and quietly evocative remnant of early medieval monastic architecture in the Graubünden highlands.
