Temple of Adonis, Dura-Europos

The Temple of Adonis is an ancient sanctuary within the ruined city of Dura-Europos on the Euphrates, near present-day Al-Mayadin in Syria. The site served as a Hellenistic-Roman frontier garrison whose numerous temples stood side by side — a rare document of religious syncretism where Persian, Greek, and Roman traditions overlapped. The structure was built of mud-brick with plastered stone facings, consistent with regional building customs. It was excavated between 1931 and 1934 by a Yale University–led American-French expedition under Michael Rostovtzeff, who famously called Dura-Europos the 'Pompeii of the Orient.' The site has been severely looted and damaged since the Syrian Civil War, and access for researchers and visitors remains effectively impossible.
