Ai-Khanoum

Ai-Khanoum sits in the far northeast of Afghanistan at the confluence of the Kokcha and Amu Darya rivers, and represents the only extensively excavated Greco-Bactrian city in the world. Founded by successors of Alexander the Great, its ancient name remains unknown to this day — a rare blank in classical scholarship. Around 145 BCE nomadic invaders destroyed the city and it was never resettled, leaving the foundations of a gymnasium, palace, temple, and theatre preserved in unusually clear plan. French archaeologists began systematic excavation in 1964, but decades of civil war and looting have since severely damaged the site. What survives is a singular record of Hellenism at the edge of the known ancient world, where Greek colonnades met Central Asian building traditions on the slopes of the Hindu Kush.
