Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre

The Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre on Lenin Square is the largest theatre building in Russia by footprint — surpassing even the Bolshoi in Moscow — and the undisputed cultural capital of Siberia. Construction began during World War II and was completed in February 1944, a deliberate Soviet statement of cultural endurance amid wartime. The building is defined by a central 35-metre dome fronted by an enormous colonnaded portico, blending Soviet constructivism with Stalinist neoclassical grandeur. Its stage is 30 metres deep and equally tall, accommodating the large-scale productions that have earned the company a reputation among Russia's top opera and ballet ensembles. Today the theatre draws audiences from across Siberia and beyond with a season of premieres, touring productions, and classic ballet repertoire.
