Yerevan Opera Theater
Yerevan
The Abay Kazakh National Opera and Ballet Theatre is Almaty's foremost performing arts venue, named after Abai Qunanbajuly — the 19th-century Kazakh poet and philosopher considered the father of modern Kazakh written literature. Completed in 1934 in a Soviet classicist style, the building's columned portico and symmetrical facade make it one of the more formally composed landmarks in the city center. The theater houses Kazakhstan's leading opera and ballet company, programming both European classics and Kazakh premieres. Its ornate auditorium remains the focal point of Almaty's cultural calendar, hosting national celebrations alongside regular evening performances.
