Alter Botanischer Garten Tübingen

The Alter Botanischer Garten in Tübingen traces its origins to 1535, making it one of the oldest botanical gardens in Germany, originally founded to serve the University of Tübingen at a time when Renaissance humanism placed natural history at the heart of academic life. For centuries it functioned as a site of teaching and botanical research before the university relocated its active garden to a new campus site. Today the grounds are a public city park, owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg and maintained by the city. Several of its oldest trees carry protected status as Naturdenkmäler — living markers of the garden's nearly 500-year continuity. The whole ensemble is listed as a Kulturdenkmal, and its shaded paths offer a quiet pause steps from Tübingen's historic center.
