Amadeu Antonio Memorial

Berlin

Memorial for Amadeu Antonio in Eberswalde – one of the first victims of far-right violence in reunified Germany, 1990.

Amadeu Antonio was an Angolan contract worker who was attacked by a far-right group in Eberswalde in 1990 and died of his injuries days later. He is regarded as one of the first known victims of far-right violence in reunified Germany. The trial resulted in convictions for bodily injury causing death rather than murder – a verdict that remains politically and legally contested. The Amadeu Antonio Foundation was established in his memory in 1998 to promote democracy and combat right-wing extremism. The memorial in Eberswalde commemorates his fate.
