Ancienne abbaye de Vauclair

The Abbaye de Vauclair is a ruined Cistercian monastery founded in 1134 in the Ailette valley southeast of Laon, in the Hauts-de-France region. Its location near the Chemin des Dames ridge proved catastrophic: the abbey was completely destroyed during the intense trench warfare of 1917–1918, and only conserved masonry walls survive today. Classified as a French historic monument and free to enter, the site is set within a landscaped park where reconstructed herb gardens evoke the monastery's medieval agricultural traditions — a contemplative stop combining Romanesque remnants with the sobering memory of the Western Front.
