Basilique Saint-Remi

The Basilique Saint-Remi is an 11th-century Romanesque abbey church in southern Reims, dedicated to Bishop Remigius, who baptised the Frankish king Clovis I in 496 AD. For centuries the former royal abbey kept the Holy Ampulla — a vial of sacred chrism oil used to anoint French kings during their coronations at the nearby Notre-Dame Cathedral — making it a site of immense dynastic significance across the medieval French kingdom. In 1991 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the cathedral and the Palace of Tau. The adjoining monastic buildings now house the city's historical museum, while the basilica itself remains open to visitors, with full wheelchair access throughout.
