Apple, Breadfruit and Soursop

Three sculptures in Hackney honouring the Windrush generation — the first permanent public sculptures by a Black female artist in the UK.

Three hip-height sculptures on Narrow Way in Hackney, London, depict Caribbean fruits: a custard apple in white Carrara marble, and a breadfruit and soursop in bronze. British-Caribbean artist Veronica Ryan (b. 1956) created the work for Hackney's Windrush Artwork Commission as a memorial to the Windrush generation — Caribbean immigrants who came to the UK after World War II. When unveiled in 2021, they became the first permanent public sculptures by a Black female artist in the United Kingdom, prompting national conversation about whose stories are commemorated in public space.
